Recipes For Baby Food

Raising a child is one of the most rewarding things anyone can do. It is also among the most stressful, particularly when it comes to feeding them. When should you start weaning them? What foods shouldn’t they eat? How much fruit and veg should they be having? With these month-by-month recipes for baby food I have put together for you, feeding time will be a little more fun!

Recipes For Baby Food: 6 Months

Simple veggies like broccoli, peas, and carrots are among the most ideal foods you should start feeding your baby at this age. Introduce these veggies one at a time and once they are comfortable, you can start throwing in some fruit and other vegetables into the mix. At 6 months old, you needn’t worry about them having breakfast, lunch, and dinner, food just once or twice a day should suffice. This is also the age when they can start having finger foods such as soft carrot sticks and steamed broccoli. Once they’re confident eating these, try introducing sweet potato wedges, start with the below purées first though! The Department of Health recommends weaning at around 6 months but it’s best to make sure they are ready first.

Purées

These are super helpful when it comes to helping your baby start swallowing solid foods. They are easy to prepare and can be stored easily too. There’s no need to add any salt or sugar, these recipes are great as they are. Broccoli and carrot purées are very similar to make so I’ve listed them together. Once they’ve moved past these basic vegetables, you can turn almost any fruit or veg into a purée using the same method.

Recipes For Baby Food: 10 Months

At this age, your little one should start showing some taste preferences (in other words, they start to become more picky)! You can start introducing them to three small meals a day. You must encourage them to tell you when they become full so they don’t overeat. Make sure they are still getting around 500ml of their usual milk every day.

Tortilla Spanish Omelette

Tortilla Spanish Omelette

Ingredients

  • 1 whole onion

  • 275g potato, preferably Desirée or similar

  • 3 tbsp olive oil

  • 5 whole large egg

Method

  • Put 3 tablespoons of olive oil in the pan on the hob and leave on a medium heat. You then need to peel the onion and chop it in two, then cut these halves into thin slices and place them in the pan. Next, peel the potatoes and cut them into thin round slices. Then dry them in a clean tea towel and add them to the pan. Mix the onion and potatoes in the olive oil to make sure they are thoroughly coated. Turn the heat right down, put a lid on the pan and cook them gently for about 20 minutes, or until soft. Next up, you need to break the eggs into a bowl and lightly whisk them using a fork.  When the onions and potatoes are cooked, you then pour on the egg mixture and add the remainder of the olive oil.  Make sure to keep the heat low and leave the omelet to cook gently for around 20 minutes.  When there is no liquid egg left on the top, it’s ready to cook on the other side. The easiest way to do this is by turning it out upside down onto a plate, and then sliding it back into the frying pan. Cut into thin wedges or finger-food-sized cubes before serving.

Potato Spinach Frittata

Potato Spinach Frittata (4-6 portions)

Ingredients

  • 500g new potatoes, 100g young spinach, 15g unsalted butter

  • 1 tbsp olive oil, 3 whole spring onions, chopped, half a garlic clove, crushed, 3 medium eggs, 1 tbsp whole milk, 50g cheddar cheese, grated

Method

  • Start by simmering the potatoes in water for around 15 minutes, until nice and soft. Drain and cut into thick slices

  • Next, you need to cook the spinach in a tiny amount of water for about 3-4 minutes or until the leaves start to wilt. Drain well and squeeze out the excess moisture. Start to heat the butter and olive oil in a large (non-stick) frying pan. Gently cook the spring onions and garlic for about 3 minutes and then add in the potatoes. Cook over low heat for 10 minutes, stirring a few times. Add the spinach, stirring it through, and sprinkle the grated cheese on top. You then need to preheat the grill and beat the eggs and milk together, then pour into the frying pan. Cook on the hob over low heat until set, then brown and set the surface under the grill. Cool for a few minutes and then slice into wedges or squares.
