Essential oils safe for cats
Essential oils are plant extracts that contain a large amount of volatile oil obtained by distillation or cold pressing. Essential oils are utilized in a variety of ways, they are used as an insecticide, in aromatherapies, personal care products, flavorings, herbal remedies, and liquid potpourri. Some veterinarians also incorporate essential oils into their treatments but the use of essential oils to treat the ailment in pets particularly in cats should be done with caution. Cats are more susceptible to certain toxins like essential oils because of cats' relative lack of glucuronidase. They are also very sensitive to phenols and phenolic compounds, which can also be found in some essential oils. However, that doesn't mean you can't use some essential oils for cats but make sure you know which are safe and which are toxic.
A few common essential oils that are safe to use for cats include:
Copaiba oil:
Copaiba essential oil is a powerful antioxidant and is extremely versatile. It supports the health of the cardiovascular, immune, digestive, urinary, respiratory, musculoskeletal, and nervous systems of cats. It also helps to promote a smooth and healthy integumentary system.
Cedarwood oil:
Cedarwood oil is a safe essential oil for cats because it is often made without phenol. But you should check the label for contents before use.
Rosemary:
To use rosemary as flea repellent it would be better to boil one pot of water with a twig of rosemary. And dilute a tub of water with the brew. Allow your cat to sit in the mixture for 2 to 5 minutes.
Lemongrass oil:
Lemongrass oil is most often found in the form of a hydrosol made by steam-distilling or hydro-distilling plant matter. Lemongrass oil is a safe essential oil to use around cats at a low concentration. However, It should not be directly applied to their skin or ingested by cats.
