Essential oils that are safe for cats

Essential oils are the concentrated, aromatic compounds that are extracted from the roots, stems, leaves, petals, bark, seeds, or peels of plants. Nowadays essential oils have become a popular and holistic remedy for everyday ailments, from anxiety to the common cold. Essential oils are often labeled as natural or organic but it is important to remember that they can still pose a serious risk when inhaled, ingested, or absorbed through your pet’s skin because many plants contain materials that are toxic, irritating, or likely to cause allergic reactions when applied to the skin.

Therefore, using essential oils diffusers and room sprays can present a number of potential problems for cats because cats are more sensitive than humans, the smell emanating from your reed diffuser may calming for you, but it can be overwhelming to cats. If you notice any signs of respiratory distress, such as labored breathing, increased panting or wheezing, immediately contact your veterinarian.

Cats are particularly sensitive to essential oils, and if ingested in significant quantities effects such as gastrointestinal upset, central nervous system depression, and even liver damage could occur. However, there are a few exceptions safe essential oils for cats:

  • Lemongrass oil:

It is most often found in the form of a hydrosol, that is made by steam-distilling or hydro-distilling plant matter and is a safe essential oil to use around cats at a low concentration. However, It should not be ingested by cats or directly applied to their skin.

  • Cedarwood oil:

Cedarwood oil is one of the safe essential oils for cats. It is often made without phenol.

  • Rosemary oil:

Rosemary is also a safe essential oil for cats. To use rosemary oil as flea repellent, boil one pot of water with a twig of rosemary. Then, dilute a tub of water with the brew and allow your cat to sit in the mixture for 2-5 minutes.
