Relaxing Music For Children
Adults aren’t the only ones who get stressed, sometimes children feel the pressure too! They’ve got school to worry about, seemingly endless amounts of homework, plus many physical changes to work through as well. It is no secret that music has long been used as a de-stressing device. A slower tempo can quiet your mind and help you relax, making you feel soothed while releasing all the stress of the day.
So what type of music reduces stress the best? This is a fully subjective question, everyone has their comfort music. But some types of music have been proven to relax muscles and create a feeling of calm within the listener, particularly when they hit that sweet spot of 60 beats per minute.
Somewhat surprisingly, research has shown that Native American, Celtic, Indian stringed-instruments, drums, and flutes are very effective at relaxing the mind even when played moderately loud. Sounds of rain, thunder, and nature sounds may also be relaxing particularly when mixed with other music, such as light jazz, classical (the "largo" movement), and easy listening music. Classical music is also very effective which is why many parent’s swear by it when trying to get their children to sleep. I’ve compiled an eclectic list of relaxing music for children so hopefully, you will find something to keep your little one completely stress free!
Relaxing Music For Children: Piano Music
This hour-long video is perfect for those who love to relax alongside piano music and cute animal scenery! The more astute among you will notice that the music is from “Colours Of The Wind” from Disney’s Pocahontas which in my humble opinion, is one of the most beautiful Disney songs ever made, so it makes perfect sense that it’s so effective at keeping your little one chilled out. It even has cute bird and animal sounds in the background!
Relaxing Music For Children: Disney Piano Ensemble
For those who can’t get enough Disney in their life (like me!), this one is for you. It features piano versions of all the best-loved Disney classics from The Lion King to The Little Mermaid and even Frozen! This is my go-to video when I’m playing with my nephews and I decide we all need a little down-time. It does the trick every time!
Relaxing Music For Children: Earth Drum Music
This one is a little different and may not be to every child’s tastes, but it has been scientifically proven to slow down your heartbeat and relax your muscles. It features beautiful imagery of the ocean, cliffs of the Pacific Coast, and autumn in the great forests of New England. These images are accompanied by trance beats with Taos Log Drums, Incan Pan Flutes, electric and acoustic guitars, world percussion, atmospheric synthesisers, and sounds of nature.
Relaxing Music For Children: Morning Relaxing Music
School mornings are synonymous with chaos! School jumpers are nowhere to be seen, the cereal has run out, and they’ve just informed you that they need a long list of ingredients for food-tech that very day! Now, I’m not claiming that playing this song will instantly dissipate any stress but it may help reduce it on both ends. Featuring relaxing strumming sounds and a cute picture of a girl on a swing, this should work wonders on even the most stressed out of children.
Relaxing Music For Children: Marconi Union
Don’t worry if you read that as “Macaroni Union”, I did the same! In a study carried out by British neuroscientists, listening to this song resulted in a striking 65% reduction in participants' overall anxiety, and a 35% reduction in their usual physiological resting rates. Its carefully arranged harmonies, rhythms, and bass lines help slow a listener's heart rate, reduce blood pressure and lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol. It got me through four year’s at university so I’m sure it will prove very effective at helping your child de-stress too!
Relaxing Music For Kids: Happy Music
Kid’s have the attention span of a goldfish so many find themselves bored with those science-backed videos. This happy relaxing music for children might be more their speed. It is upbeat and positive while also bringing forth a feeling of calm, and at three hours long, you can just leave it on in the background without worrying about having to change it!
Relaxing Music For Children: Underwater Ambient Music
If your child is a fan of all things under the sea, then this might be the one for them. It features exquisite underwater imagery so they can relax while taking in the wonders of the ocean! The slow tempo means that it is also great to play if your child struggles to get to sleep at night.
