Pick a Pine Tree

Author: Patricia Toht

Goodreads rating: 4.16

What is it about? No prizes for guessing what this one’s about! This wonderful book for toddlers about Christmas follows the day a family of four leaves their home to go out and buy, you guessed it, a pine tree! After taking it home with them, they invite friends out to sort out the house and hanging decorations. The once simple pine tree transforms into a glorious Christmas tree adorned with fairy lights and decorations.

My review: When I think about books for toddlers about christmas, I am a huge fan of this one. Double spread pages make for a true visual treat and it is slightly different from your average book about Christmas. While it conveys all the heartwarming messages about families coming together on Christmas, it does so while avoiding some of the more heavy-handed Christmas tropes.

Snowmen At Christmas

Author: Caralyn Buehner

Goodreads rating: 4.20

What is it about? This New York Times Bestseller make the hot list for books for toddlers about christmas and explores the secret life of snowmen! It followers their late-night adventures in the empty town for a holiday gathering. They play games, enjoy ice-cold snacks, and decorate a tree! Snowman Santa even makes an appearance!

My review: A fabulously festive book that is full of charm. The rhyming text makes for an easy read and the illustrations by Mark Buehner are just delightful. Just like in its prequel, there are tiny hidden pictures to search for in each illustration which makes reading it all the more fun!

The Snowman

Author: Raymond Briggs

Goodreads rating: 4.22

What is it about? Some of you may recognise this from the classic animation by the same name. It tells the story of a little boy who builds a snowman in his garden only for it to come alive at night. They fly through the air and over his town, meet his other snowman friends and have a good old dance.

My review: Continuing on with the snowman theme, I could not help but put this one on the list of books for toddlers about christmas. It is without a doubt one of the best books for toddlers about Christmas (if I say so myself), not to mention it’s short-film counterpart is equally charming. The beautiful illustrations make it super easy to flick through but don’t mistake this for a lack of storytelling. A picture does tell a thousand words after all.

Fancy Nancy: Splendiferous Christmas

Author: Jane O’Connor

Goodreads rating: 4.20

What is it about? What could be fancier than Christmas? There are presents to be elegantly wrapped, Christmas cookies to be adorned with sprinkles, not to mention the tree! She’s saved up all year to buy a tree with her own money but what will happen when things don’t turn out the way she expected…? Will Christmas still be splendiferous?

My review: This is one of the books for toddlers about christmas that is full of glorious vocabulary and fabulous one-liners, my favourite being "Dad says we must compromise, that means we end up with the tree my mom wants”. Too right! It’s a great book to introduce conversations about holiday traditions, family, and the value of patience, perfectly capturing the essence of Christmas.

Little Blue Truck’s Christmas

Author: Alice Schertle

Goodreads rating: 4.32

What is it about? Little Blue Truck is spreading cheer by delivering Christmas trees to his animal friends. It’s up to you to help him count each green tree from one to five and back again! Are you up for this festive challenge?

My review: It’s everything you could ask for in a Christmas book! Cute winter setting, playful rhymes, and even a little surprise on the final page! Probably my least favourite out of all the Little Blue Truck books for no other reason than it’s a lot more simple but it nevertheless manages to still hold its own.

It’s Christmas, David!

Author: David Shannon

Goodreads rating: 4.12

What is it about? Has David been naughty or nice this year…? Well, that’s up to Santa to decide. Has David done enough to deserves a shiny new fire truck under the tree or will he end up with a lump of coal in his stocking?

My review: As someone who was always trying to peek at hidden gift packages and play with all the delicate Christmas ornaments, this was a wonderful bit of nostalgia for me. It’s very lighthearted and humorous in places but it still has a moral to the story. A true Christmas classic and one of the best books for toddlers about christmas.
