The Top 10 Benefits of Celery Juice

  1. Benefits of Celery Juice = Rich in vitamins and minerals: These include folate, potassium, vitamin K, vitamin C and vitamin B6. This cocktail is the perfect recipe for healthy, glowing skin (and who doesn’t want that). Celery is high in luteolin which is renown for protecting skin from the inside and preventing damage from UV rays. Some claim it to be the holy grail of skin treatments saying it helped them clear up conditions such as psoriasis and acne.

  2. Benefits of Celery Juice = Alkalising: In fact, celery is one of the most alkaline foods going! It has been proven that an alkaline diet prevents chronic diseases, leading to a longer and healthier life.

  3. Benefits of Celery Juice = Lowers cholesterol: Celery contains a compound known as 3-n-butylphthalide (BuPh), which reportedly helps to lower the number of lipids (bad cholesterol) in our bloodstream!

  4. Benefits of Celery Juice = Contains cancer-fighting compounds and anti-oxidants: You may or may not have heard of this wonderful thing called apigenin, but it is this powerful little flavonoid that has been proven to kill cancer cells! The polyacetylenes in celery also contain chemoprotective compounds. These help to reduce toxicity while boosting immunity and help slow the growth of mutated cells

  5. Benefits of Celery Juice = Natural anti-inflammatory: The polyacetylenes are also incredibly good at reducing joint pain, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout. This is soothing for the nerves and the body as a whole, meaning you feel calmer and more relaxed.

  6. Benefits of Celery Juice = Restores hydrochloric acid which heals and activates the gut: Simply put, it helps us digest things faster and more efficiently. Hydrochloric acid (stomach acid) is a necessary component that helps break down food, particularly protein. When your stomach acid is low, the body has to work hard to digest that food, calling on other resources to do so. This leaves us feeling tired and lethargic. If you suffer from stomach ulcers or acid reflux then you might also want to start thinking about drinking this magical concoction for it also replenishes and heals depleted levels of gastric mucus that is often lost through these two processes.

  7. Benefits of Celery Juice = Helps the liver: Research has proven that the benefits of celery juice extend to helping reduce fat build-up in the liver. The abundance of nutrients in celery protects the liver by helping it to produce enzymes that flush out fat and toxins!

  8. Benefits of Celery Juice = Reduces blood pressure: Celery improves the flow of calcium and potassium in cells which in turn helps lower high blood pressure by acting as a smooth muscle relaxant. The blood vessels expand and contract with much greater ease as a result.

  9. Benefits of Celery Juice = Improves digestion: Celery’s mild natural laxative and diuretic properties mean that’s incredible at getting things moving. It helps with constipation, puffiness, bloating and water retention.

  10. Benefits of Celery Juice = Combats infection: The powerful antimicrobial properties found within the compounds in celery are great at fighting infection and boosting your immunity! Celery juice is efficient in reducing uric acid and stimulating urine production. This is particularly useful in fighting bacterial infections within the digestive tract and reproductive organs, and in turn prevents UTIs, bladder and kidney disorders.

When should you drink celery juice?

To fully get the most out of the benefits of celery juice, it is recommended that you drink it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. You then should wait 20-30 minutes before drinking anything else.

How much celery juice should you drink?

Start by drinking 16 ounces (about two cups, or a pint glass) to optimise the benefits of celery juice. If you struggle with two cups at the beginning, start with just 1 cup and slowly increase. If you are still finding it unpleasant, then perhaps it isn’t for you.

Why should you juice celery instead of just eating it?

You can of course do this, but in order to gain access to the full range of benefits, this would require you to eat the whole head of celery first thing in the morning. I don’t know about you but I’ll take mine juiced thank you! One whole head of celery ( 9-12 stalks) equals 16 ounces of juice when juiced.

Does the celery need to be organic?

An important question and while this is of course preferable so you can obtain the full benefits of celery juice, it is by no means obligatory. If you opt for non-organic celery, make sure you wash it thoroughly to remove any lingering pesticides or chemicals.

Using 1 bunch of organic celery, cut off the base to separate the stalks

  1. You then need to wash them in clean water to remove any residual chemicals

  2. Chop the celery stalks into 1-inch pieces and place them in the blender.

  3. Add 1/4 cup of purified water and put the lid on the blender. Blend until smooth.

  4. Place a clean nut milk bag over the mouth of a pitcher or bowl and pour the blended celery through the nut milk bag. Use your hands to squeeze the celery juice through the bag.

  2. You must then wash them in clean water to remove any lingering pesticides (if non-organic)

  3. Slowly feed the celery through your juicer.

  4. Drink immediately (and hopefully, enjoy!)

  5. To save time, make enough for 2 days ( two bunches) and keep in a sealed container in the fridge
